Course Description

One of the most effective pedagogical tools for any musical ensemble is the ability to have students analyze their performances. For most of us, however, the ability to capture a performance of a rehearsal or concert requires technical knowledge and hardware/software that we don't have. The thought of wasting valuable resources. rehearsal time can also discourage exploration and use of audio recording. This workshop is focused on providing a simple and effective recording solution by using certain principles and cost-effective equipment.

Since every situation and ensemble is different, this workshop will consist of an overview of acoustic and recording principles, followed by an extensive Q & A session in which these principles can be applied to specific conditions. Participants can expect to come away with a variety of approaches that they can try with their ensembles, as well as a list of hardware and software products that can fit most budgets.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Describe basic acoustic principles.
  • Describe how to use minimal microphone recording techniques.
  • Compare audio interfaces for recording.
  • List and describe simple digital audio recording software.
  • Compare portable recording devises.
